AREDS 2 eye vitamins may help slow the progression of geographic atrophy toward the central macula, supporting macular health for AMD patients.
A recent study has shown that taking AREDS 2 eye vitamins, containing lutein and zeaxanthin, can slow the progression of geographic atrophy (GA), a severe form of vision loss AMD. These findings offer new hope for patients seeking non-invasive treatments to preserve their central vision.
The research, conducted as part of the AREDS and AREDS2 trials, focused on the progression of GA, which typically spreads toward the macula—the central part of the retina responsible for sharp, detailed vision.
Participants who took AREDS 2 eye vitamins, experienced a slower progression of GA compared to those who did not take these supplements. The study suggests that these nutrients may enhance the natural “foveal sparing” phenomenon, which helps protect the central retina.
Geographic atrophy often leads to significant vision loss as it progresses, and current treatments for AMD, such as injections, can be costly and invasive. The results of this study demonstrate that a simple, daily supplementation regimen could provide a safer and more accessible alternative for managing the disease.
